🇬🇧 What Time Does Trick or Treating Usually Start in the UK?

In the UK, trick or treating typically starts between 5:00 PM and 6:00 PM, depending on the age of the kids and how early it gets dark. Most younger families head out just after school finishes or once it starts to get dusky.

Start time: 5:00–6:00 PM
Peak time: 6:00–7:30 PM
Wrap-up time: 8:00 PM latest (especially in family areas)

Tip: If you're planning to give out sweets, have your lights and decorations up by 5 PM. No lights = no knocks (in the best way possible).

🇺🇸 What Time Does Trick or Treating Start in the US?

Across the US, timing varies more by region and community, but the general sweet spot is between 5:30 PM and 7:00 PM. In some suburban neighbourhoods, it can start as early as 4:00 PM — especially for younger kids.

Start time: 4:30–5:30 PM (especially for toddlers)
Peak time: 6:00–8:00 PM
Wrap-up time: 8:30–9:00 PM (older kids or busier neighbourhoods)

📍 Urban vs Suburban Trick or Treating Times

Cities (London, New York, Chicago): Expect a later start, around 6 PM, especially in high-density areas or flats.
Suburbs & Villages: Often start earlier, with families trickling out just before dark.

🌟 How to Know If a House Is Open for Trick or Treating

Here’s the general Halloween code (UK and US):

Lights on? Possibly
Decorations up? Probably welcome
Gate open or porch lit? Worth a knock

❌ Avoid if:

Lights are off
No pumpkins or Halloween signs
“No trick-or-treaters” signs are visible
